There was a reason he killed from a distance. Really, truly piss Scotty off, and it was possible to wake up frozen to death in your own quarters, or trapped in the lift like this, for days. He didn't generally kill with his bare hands or with his knife unless he felt seriously threatened, and while Uhura was a threat, she wasn't enough of a threat yet to warrant him getting his hands dirty.
