Of the many strange occurrences she could attribute to the community, Scotty being transformed into a woman definitely ranked among the top few. Of course, there was no way to be sure that it was community-related, but it seemed likely given that they'd encountered nothing in their universe that seemed to explain it.

She knew he was extremely distressed by the situation, but it was still a little comical. She just had to keep reminding herself that he was still Scotty, and certain areas of conversation were always going to be awkward, no matter what genders they were.

But she wasn't going to leave him to face his transformation alone, so she packed up what she saw as the essentials and walked to his quarters, ringing the com when she arrived.

He resisted the urge to run his hand through his hair, and just nodded instead, smiling. "Aye, we're... we're doin' good." And he couldn't help but think about what Aileas had told him, back when he'd been able to see her and talk to her. "Did you see on the community, when everyone had those daemon things?" he asked. "I... I had one, for a couple o' days, an'... It's hard t'explain, but..." Aileas had really liked Jack, had got Scotty to thinking that maybe he was growing just a little more than fond of the other man.

She listened carefully to his explanation, and could easily hear what he wasn't saying. Her smile was warm but a little cautious. "I'm very happy for you, Scotty. I didn't see much of what happened with the daemon - I was attending that conference of Thelos II - but I heard a little about it. What happened?"

"Had t'skip out a couple days. Couldn't take Aileas down t'the engine room with me," he explained, though he didn't explain why. "That was her name. Aileas." He sounded a bit wistful, talking about her; he missed her dearly, although he knew it was for the best that she wasn't around anymore. "She said... she said she thought that Jack was good for me," he said, still smiling. "An' not just because o' the sex."

She could tell that he missed his daemon, and hummed sympathetically. The next admission was both wonderful and slightly concerning. "It sounds to me like this is definitely about more than sex," she said quietly. "I can see how happy you've been lately with him in your life." She wanted to ask what Jack thought about the whole thing, if they were on the same page, but that question could wait.

"He's a good friend," Scotty answered, just barely stopping himself from going to pick at a stray thread on his shirt. The nails, he reminded himself. "An'... Well, I told him if he needed any help with Torchwood, I'd lend a hand." That wasn't exactly what this was about, but he wasn't certain he wanted to admit even to himself that he was more than just a little fond of Jack.

Nyota almost laughed at his response because it had so little to do with the actual issue. "I'm sure he is," she replied lightly, opening the white polish and reaching for one of his hands so she could work on the tips. "But this isn't really about friendship, is it?"

He ducked his head, watching Uhura work on his nails, chewing on his lip a moment. "I don't know," he admitted, after a few moments of silence. "I... I really don't know. I mean... I just don't know." It had been so long since he'd been in any sort of relationship that he honestly couldn't tell what, exactly, he felt about Jack.

She hummed sympathetically and looked up at him without a trace of amusement. "I understand," she said softly. "It's okay not to know. You have plenty of time to figure it out. If I were you I'd definitely end up over-thinking everything, and... that probably won't help anything."

"I don't want t'mess this up, y'know?" he replied, his voice equally soft and quiet. "I mean..." He trailed off, sighing, and shook his head again. "I really am goin' t'start over-thinkin' this."

"Just take things one day at a time. I'm probably a little overly fond of labels and certainty, but I think sometimes it's better to just take things as they come. And I don't think you're going to mess it up, Scotty." Jack might not be the type of man she really approved of, but he seemed to genuinely care for Scotty.

"Nah, see... labels. M'not so sure about labels, love." He shrugged a bit, holding up a hand to examine the nails Uhura had already finished with. "I mean. Callin' him my boyfriend, that's just. Way too secondary school, love. Partner? Sounds like we're runnin' a business together. Lover? Sounds like a bad soap opera."

Nyota laughed a little at his summary. "Oh, I've never been much for traditional labels, though of the ones you've listed I'd definitely go with lover." Smiling a little to herself, she added, "But I prefer inventing my own. Usually I choose a Swahili word."

Scotty made a face when Uhura suggested they go with 'lover'. As far as he was concerned, it really did sound soap opera-ish. And it wasn't really a word he felt fit him. Or Jack, for that matter. "Y'know, just between you an' me, I think I'm perfectly fine with just bein' Scotty an' Jack."

Scotty's relationship with Jack - however it was defined - definitely seemed to be serious. This concerned her a little, but... "I like that. Whatever you call it, you look really happy when you talk about him, Scotty," she said gently, putting his hand down. "Your nails are done, but don't do anything with them for a few minutes while they dry."

He was bad at sitting still, and knowing that he couldn't do anything with his hands while he waited for his nails to dry just made it all that much harder to sit still and not do anything. "An' how happy is 'really happy', then?"

Nyota just laughed and shook her head. "I don't know how to answer that, but... I approve. I'm a little worried about you, but it seems like this is a good thing for you right now."

He smiled, trying not to fidget, still waiting on his nails to dry. "You remember what I said, though, back when I was tryin' t'decide whether or not t'give it a go? I mean, the general idea's still the same. Maybe it won't work out, an' maybe I'll get a bit hurt, but if that happens, it's hardly the end o' the world. An'... who knows. Could be more'n worth the risk, if it does work out."

Nyota nodded but didn't reply. It sounded like a very healthy approach to relationships, one she often had a difficult time emulating. Putting herself out there wasn't always the easiest thing to do. "I think we need popcorn," she announced. "I'll get some, since your nails are still drying." Only when she'd returned with a bowl of popcorn did she add, "I think that's a very good approach to relationships."

Scotty had reached a point in his life where the prospect of settling down was simply not an option; whatever it was that he had with Jack right now was more or less the best he could hope for when it came to a relationship. And he was okay with that, because he didn't need someone to come home to every day; he needed someone who'd understand when the ship came first, someone who didn't mind going a bit without getting to see him. And Jack was exactly that someone. He just... hadn't counted on getting attached. "I just hope it does work out. Somehow. Whatever's there t'work out."

"That's the question, isn't it... If you're happy with the status quo, there might not be anything to work out." She knew she probably wouldn't be happy with the arrangement Scotty had, but it seemed to be working out well enough for him. The ship would always come first, so a committed relationship could be difficult to maintain.

"I think," he said after a moment, unable to keep from tapping his fingers against his legs, "first I have t'figure out what it is I want." He should probably talk to Jack about it at some point too, but... Not until he had a better idea of how he felt and what he wanted in their relationship.

"I agree, though that's often easier said than done." She smiled and offered him the popcorn, because it was clearly necessary. "But I have confidence that you'll figure it out eventually."

"Here's hopin', anyway." He reached over to grab some of the popcorn, before adding, "Alright. So now what do we do?"

"Now we watch sappy movies and have pillow fights, obviously," she replied, a mischievous glint in her eyes.

"I don't think so," he replied, raising his eyebrows at her. "You just want t'be able t'say you had a pillow fight with the Chief Engineer. Admit it."
