Of the many strange occurrences she could attribute to the community, Scotty being transformed into a woman definitely ranked among the top few. Of course, there was no way to be sure that it was community-related, but it seemed likely given that they'd encountered nothing in their universe that seemed to explain it.

She knew he was extremely distressed by the situation, but it was still a little comical. She just had to keep reminding herself that he was still Scotty, and certain areas of conversation were always going to be awkward, no matter what genders they were.

But she wasn't going to leave him to face his transformation alone, so she packed up what she saw as the essentials and walked to his quarters, ringing the com when she arrived.

"Trust me, love, I'll be wearin' boots, an' that's it." It was bad enough that he looked like a woman. He just hoped that whatever this was, it didn't last long enough that he felt compelled to act like one too. Not that he had anything against women, but he was rather fond of being a man. It was, after all, what he was comfortable with being. "Could you braid the hair, maybe?" he asked after a moment, running his fingers through it again. "One braid, down the back? Seems like that would be best for keepin' it out o' the way."

"Fair enough," she replied, seeing no reason to argue when it made little difference to her what Scotty wore. All she really cared about was that he was comfortable. When he suggested braiding his hair, she nodded. "I'd be happy to." Reaching into the bag, she pulled out a few products and set them on the sink. "After you shower you should rub just a little of this into your hair. It'll make it much more manageable. I can also teach you how to braid it yourself, but it'll take a little practice. For now, do you want to go sit on the couch while I braid it?" There was no real need for them to stay in the bathroom.

He sighed at the hair products, shaking his head. It was so much simpler to just run a towel over his hair and comb it down once he got out of the shower. Maybe he should cut all of this off, he thought. Cut it short enough that he wouldn't have to worry about it. For now, though, he led the way back out to the couch, and sat down. He couldn't even sit like he normally did. "I really, really hope this doesn't last very long."

She followed him back into the room and sat down on the couch. "I know. I really am sorry you're going through this, Scotty. Can you turn a little more that way so I can reach your hair better?" she asked, gesturing. "I'm sorry if this hurts a little." She'd brought a brush, which she used to gently work the tangles out of Scotty's hair. Once it was untangled she started carefully french braiding it.

Another sigh, and he turned slightly so she could reach his hair. It just felt weird, all that weight on his head. Cutting it all off was seeming like a better idea by the minute. Still... he had to admit that the mental image of him sitting there, letting Uhura braid his hair, was a pretty funny one, and he couldn't help but laugh a bit. "God, all we need now is a sappy movie an' this is practically a sleepover," he said, still laughing. "Christ, this is ridiculous."

It was definitely a relief to hear Scotty laughing, even if it was strange to hear his laugh sound so feminine. "A little," she agreed, laughing along and continuing to wind Scotty's long hair into a braid. "I'm sure we could find a romantic comedy to watch. Then we could have a pillow fight and paint each others nails."

"Alright, now, I draw the line at nail paintin'," he replied, almost twisting around to look at her before he remembered that she was braiding his hair, and he probably shouldn't do anything that might mess it up. "Pillow fights, sure. Romantic comedies... alright, sure, if you really want. But no makeup, of any sort, aye? S'bad enough I have t'wear this." He tugged at one of the bra straps through his shirt. "Besides, if I let you paint my nails an' all that, an' Jack were t'hear about it? I'd never live it down."

Nyota made a noise that was very much not a giggle when he protested the nail painting. "But Scotty, I think Jack would love it if you had painted nails. I have a lovely shade of pink that would be perfect." She was joking, of course, because there was no way in hell Scotty would agree to pink nails, but she was sort of hoping she might convince him to let her give him a French manicure. "And pillow fights and romantic comedies will be right up."

"I don't care what Jack would love, you're not paintin' my nails. An' especially not pink." And hell, he'd been joking about the pillow fight and the movie, but if Uhura was going to insist on it, he figured it wouldn't be too much of a blow to his dignity. Just as long as Uhura kept quiet about it. "Jack would never let me live it down if I let you paint my nails pink."

"I suppose you're right. Painting them pink is probably overkill. A french manicure, on the other hand, would be much more subtle. It's really more like nail care than a manicure, anyway." She knew he was joking about the pillow fight and the movie, but it was far too much to tease, and she wouldn't object to either of them.

"Love, I work in the engine room, in case you've forgotten. Anything you do t'my nails, they're just goin' t'get chipped an' worn down." And never mind that it was shore leave and he wasn't going to be in the engine room until it was over. That was beside the point. Although it would make a compelling argument against him.

"Oh, that is a problem," she agreed, pretending to consider for a moment. "I'll tell you what. Let me paint your nails... and I'll give you polish remover for when shore leave is over and you go back to work in the engine room." She couldn't contain the mischievous smile that wanted to spread across her face.

He sighed, because really, his only other argument just boiled down to a simple 'no' and... Well, when had he ever been able to say no to Uhura? "You just want me t'give in so you can say you've painted the Chief Engineer's nails," he accused her, giving in. "Fine. If it'll make you happy."

"Exactly," she admitted easily. He couldn't see her ear-splitting grin, but could probably hear it in her voice. She nearly squealed with victory when he agreed, but managed to control herself. "It will, thank you. And I'm all done with your hair," she said, securing his braid with a hair tie and then triumphantly pulling polish out of her bag.

He just sighed, turning around now that Uhura was done with his hair. At least it felt like it was less in the way now. If it stayed out of the way, maybe he'd reconsider his decision to chop it all off. Motioning to the polish, he told her, "Just as long as it's not pink. "Go on, then."

"Thank you," she said, unable to keep the wide grin off her face. She could barely believe that she was actually getting to paint Scotty's nails - it was ridiculous on several levels - but she definitely relished the opportunity. After opening the polish and carefully balancing it on top of the sofa, she gently took his hand and pulled it closer, arranging it so that his fingers were resting in her palm. Then she carefully started to paint his nails, still grinning ear to ear.

It was beyond ridiculous, but hell. It wasn't like anyone who worked for him was going to see. Or, if they did, it wasn't like they'd know who he was. "I can't believe I'm lettin' you do this," he told Uhura, pointing a finger at her. A finger on the hand she wasn't currently working on, because he was pretty sure that if he moved and made her mess up she'd just make him sit through it all over again.

She laughed softly, pleased that he was holding his hand still, and glanced up at him before refocusing on the task at hand. "I can't believe it either." she replied, undisguised amusement in her voice. "But you might as well embrace your temporary femininity." He probably disagreed with that sentiment, but he was still letting her do all this. It was far more fun than it should be.

"I'm not embracin' anything." He shook his head, watching her work, making a face at the smell of the polish. "I don't see how you can stand the smell o' that stuff," he said, shaking his head again. Granted, there were a few chemicals he used in the engine room that were just as strong, if not stronger, but that was sort of expected, in engineering.

"You get used to it, and the smell will be all but gone once we're done." She gently set his hand on top of the couch, giving him a look to imply it should stay there, and then reached for the other. "Since you're going to have painted nails, you might want to consider a little makeup for shore leave," she added casually.

"I'd really rather not, love, if it's all the same t'you." After all, he might physically be a woman, but he was still very much the same person underneath that, and... Drunken university shenanigans aside he couldn't really say he'd ever had a penchant for wearing makeup.

"Suit yourself, but if you change your mind we could make it very subtle." She was probably enjoying this a little too much, but she couldn't really help herself. The situation was simply ridiculous and far too amusing. "By the way, what are your plans for the rest of shore leave?"

"Well, I promised Miss Rockbell I'd go an' visit her world for a couple o' days," Scotty answered, shrugging a bit. "An' then..." He couldn't help the faint flush of pink to his cheeks as he continued. "Figured I'd spend a bit o' time with Jack."

Nyota smiled, setting one hand gently aside and reaching for the other so she could put on a second coat. "I'm glad, Scotty... So things are going well with Jack?" She assumed the answer was yes given the tone of his voice, but she still wanted to check in.

He resisted the urge to run his hand through his hair, and just nodded instead, smiling. "Aye, we're... we're doin' good." And he couldn't help but think about what Aileas had told him, back when he'd been able to see her and talk to her. "Did you see on the community, when everyone had those daemon things?" he asked. "I... I had one, for a couple o' days, an'... It's hard t'explain, but..." Aileas had really liked Jack, had got Scotty to thinking that maybe he was growing just a little more than fond of the other man.
